The mama bird gets the big nest and baby bird (to be) gets the little nest.
Here's what I got at the dollar store: A tan ceramic bird, a pack of "rattan" balls, a package of malted candy eggs, a bag of moss (not shown in this photo) and a white metal planter box.
I spray painted the bird using Heirloom White. I then used blue craft paint to highlight the raised detail on the wing and painted some of the tail feathers. I painted the birds eye and beak brown. Finally I covered the whole thing with smoke glaze and then applied some spray poly.
The metal planter box started out white but had orange and green on it as well (ick!). So I sprayed it with the Heirloom White and then added glaze on it as well.
For the nest I cut the top off the rattan ball and then stretched it into the shape of a nest. I then filled it with moss and added the candy egg.
I filled the box with crumpled paper towels so my moss had something to sit on. I very lightly spritzed all of the moss with some flat white spray paint to tone down the bright green color.I then placed the moss inside the box forming it into a nest shape and nestled the bird into her nest.
This project started out as something totally different and that project was a disaster. So I had to start from scratch coming up with a new idea for these supplies and what do ya know; this ended up being my favorite project. Don't you love it when that happens!
By the way I hope you all have noticed something very important. I only used ONE piece of candy in the project. That means you get to EAT the rest!!!! yeah!

I love how you put the little nest with egg at the base of the container with the bird, Lisa! You've inspired me to look at some of my little projects and enter into this challenge. I'm hoping I can get them into posts tonight to make it in time!
ReplyDeleteGreat job. I think a trip to Dollar Tree is in my very near future.
ReplyDeleteI definitely have to find a Dollar Tree store. Great project and it turned out so cute!! Love it!

I wish we had dollar stores that sold things as nice as you have there in your $5.00 challenge!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous!!
Oh I am loving these projects Lisa! They have all been amazing. This one is gorgeous:) ~ Tina xx
ReplyDeleteVery very cute! This is my favorite of your projects too!! Wasn't it Bob Ross (the PBS painter guy) who used to say "Happy little accidents?" :0)
ReplyDeleteToo cute! Your "disaster" turned out to be lovely. :)
ReplyDeleteSo cute! We both used a dollar store bird, but in very different ways. I love how this turned out. I really like how you didn't use really bright colors and instead opted for more neutral tones with the blue eggs - so cute!
ReplyDeleteAll three of your projects are great! Nothing like putting a little pressure on everyone :) I just bought one of those little birds today, he will be getting a coat of paint this weekend!!
ReplyDeleteAnother cute one!! Great job!
ReplyDeleteGoes to show ya that following your creative heart pays off even when our minds have other plans.
ReplyDeleteI love the format of the egg and the bird. Very sweet!
You came up with such great ideas for the challenge! It is very fun to see all of your creative ideas.
