Rustic Side Table

This is my first time participating in Miss Mustards Furniture party. As you can see, I made this leather chair all by myself, from scratch! No, just kidding, I gussied up the side table.

I found this table was on clearance at Target for $14.95. I thought it was super ugly, but for that price she had to come home with me.

The top was laminate-pressboard and it was damaged. Luckily is was just screwed (not glued) to the metal base so I knew I could replace it.

I bought a premade wood top at Home depot.

The new top is thicker and wider and much better quality.

I banged up the top putting in dents and "worm holes". This was fun! I then gave it one coat of stain with Minwax gel stain (walnut 606).  Once dry I gave it a coat of spray poly. The table isn't going to get that much use so I thought spray poly would be fine. After it dried I sanded it with very low grit sandpaper, wiped it off, and sprayed it again. Now the table is so nice and smooth.

The base of the table was a dull black. I spray painted it a deep brown using Rust-Oleum Painter's Touch (satin expresso). Then I drilled pilot holes in the top and screwed the pieces back together.

I really love the look of the rustic top.

Here she is all finished and sitting in the family room. Doesn't she look so much better than how she started!

I am soooooo happy to get this out of my garage!!
